New York City Football Club are at Stade Saputo on Saturday night to face CF Montréal.
For this edition of 'The Away End' presented by Berkeley College & Rennert International, we spoke to Saul Garcia, writer for Mount Royal Soccer, a CF Montréal blog.
Hi Saul, thanks for speaking with us. How long have you been covering a fan of CF Montréal?
I've only been covering the team since May. It's been fun as the team has many fun personalities and a coach of the year candidate. Plus, Djordje Mihailovic, who is a true star.
What’s been your favorite moment covering the team?
Covering the team would have to be the huge win in Seattle a few weeks ago. To beat the reigning CCL champions was a ton of fun and the team really showed resilience.
How would you describe the team's 2022 season so far?
Incredibly solid. The team is not as deep as others in the East and to be in fourth with all the injuries this season that include Djordje Mihailovic, Kamal Miller and more, it's a testament to Wilfried Nancy's coaching that he has this team performing well. That is why this week's game vs MLS Cup champs and second in the East is so important as the team tries to build for the postseason.
Who would you describe as Montréal's dangerman?
It's Djordje Mihailovic. Recently returned from injury, he should be 100% now and be more than ready for the NYCFC match. With him on the field the team just plays differently, everyone's energy levels and confidence are elevated knowing they have an MVP candidate on the field with them has to be really motivating. Add a recently surging striker in Romell Quioto and CFM have a really dangerous front that can do damage to any team.
What do you think will be the decisive factor in Saturday's game?
How Montréal's defense reacts to the NYCFC attack. From Talles Magno to Heber and Maxi Morales, the NYC side have a lot of attacking firepower even if Taty is gone. For CFM, the defense needs to be on their A game and limit easy chances and really make everything hard for NYCFC. The defense this season has not been stellar, but is improving as Miller is back.
For any of our fans that may be in Montréal for a game in the future, are there any spots you'd suggest they check out?
Montréal is an incredibly fun city and around the stadium there is a place close to the stadium called Poutine Centrale that is just fabulous. Highly recommend it.
