New York City FC’s Danielle Etienne made history with Haiti U-20s this weekend.
The NYCFC U-19s midfielder played the 90’ as Haiti overcame Canada 1-0 in the CONCACAF U-20 Championships third place game to book their place in this summer’s U-20 World Cup in France.
In doing so, Haiti became the first Caribbean team to ever qualify for a Women’s U-20 World Cup tournament.
Etienne’s side were unfortunate not to be contesting the final against Mexico after they were knocked out on penalties by the U.S. in the semifinals but they will look back on the tournament with pride after this victory over Canada.
Haiti defeated Trinidad & Tobago and Costa Rica in the group stages before they lost on penalties to the U.S. in the last four following a 1-1 draw.
A solitary 18th minute goal from Sherly Jeudy gave Haiti their victory over Canada and secured third place, prompting scenes of celebration at the final whistle from a Haiti team who can now make plans for France in the summer.
Concarneau, Vannes, Dinan-Lehon and Saint-Malo will play host to the tournament which will run between August 5-24, 2018.
From everyone at NYCFC, congratulations to Danielle and her teammates on this fantastic achievement.
