New York City FC’s City in the Community co-hosted a day-long soccer tournament with South Bronx United and Philadelphia-based Starfinder on August 29 at Mullaly Park in the Bronx.
Members of the Saturday Night Light’s Program, SBU and Starfinder comprised the four teams that participated in the round-robin tournament.
“It was a fun experience; I never participated in something like that,” said Abdul, a participant from Starfinder. “It was fun and interesting establishing rules before playing because it made the actual games fun.”
In July, the teams also competed in the streetfootballworld’s football3 training and tournament in Times Square.
Both tournaments featured the football3 methodology that allows the players to make up their own fair rules under the ‘three halves’ philosophy of a pre-match discussion, the match itself and a post-match discussion.
There are no referees or coaches leaving all of the responsibility to enforce the rules and settle disagreements to the players themselves.
All of the participants of the August 29 tournament were awarded with tickets to New York City FC’s match against Columbus Crew SC later that afternoon.
The tournament promoted fair play, gender equality and conflict resolution.
