Gold Cup: Camargo and Wallace Shine in First Round

It’s been a good start to the CONCACAF Gold Cup for two of NYCFC’s participants.

Miguel Camargo and Rodney Wallace were both in form for their nations in the first round of group stage play.

On Saturday, Camargo denied the United States a winning start to the competition when he scored the equalizer for Panama in Nashville.

The NYCFC forward reacted quickest in the 60^th minute when Brad Guzan palmed out Gabriel Torres’s strike, taking a touch before firing low into the corner.

That was enough to cancel out Dom Dwyer’s 49^th minute opener which had looked to be giving Bruce Arena’s men a winning start to their Gold Cup campaign.

NYCFC’s Sean Johnson was an unused substitute for the Stars and Stripes who are next in action on Wednesday when they take on Martinique, while Panama play Nicaragua.

The Gold Cup kicked off with a double header from Red Bull Arena on Friday, culminating in Costa Rica’s 1-0 win over Honduras.

Rodney Wallace played for 71 minutes for his country, assisting the only goal of the night for Marco Urena as Los Ticos got off to a winning start.

The NYCFC winger was a hive of industry on the left flank and provided the setup for Urena’s goal with an excellent improvised, volleyed cross from the byline.

Wallace will next be in action on Tuesday when Costa Rica faces Canada.
