New York City FC registered their first-ever shut out on Sunday, thanks largely in part to goalkeeper Josh Saunders. The veteran was credited with one save in the 2-0 victory over 2014 MLS Eastern Conference champion New England at Yankee Stadium and it certainly was a game-changing one.
In the 42nd minute, Revolution midfielder Diego Fagundez served the ball from the right wing into the box to forward Juan Agudelo. Sandwiched between a pair of New York City FC defenders, Agudelo dove forward, heading the ball from the 6-yard box toward the net. Saunders made himself big, stood his ground and blocked the shot. The ball was batted straight down as the MLS veteran sprawled on top of it as it straddled the goal line to preserve the one-goal advantage at halftime.
For the second consecutive week, Saunders has been nominated for the MLS Save of the Week.
