Jonathan Lewis has described joining NYCFC as “an honor”.
The club traded $250k in GAM with Chicago Fire for the third overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft 2017 and brought in the MLS Combine MVP.
A Generation adidas class winger from the University of Akron, the Floridian now just can’t wait to get started.
Lewis told NYCFC.com: “To have a trade go down to come and get me means the club showed interest in me and I’m just so happy to have this opportunity to play under Patrick Vieira and the great players at NYCFC. I’m so excited and happy.
“It’s an honor to go to such a big club – they have belief in me, so I can’t wait to get started and to repay that faith.”
Jon also discussed his admiration for Jack Harrison, who was in attendance at the SuperDraft, just a year after he was picked up by NYCFC.
Lewis said he will look no further for a role model in his upcoming rookie year.
“I spoke to Jack yesterday and told him how much I look up to him,” Lewis said.
“I play in a similar way, so I watch him a lot and now I get to play with him and learn from him. I think every young player would look up to someone like him, coming from college as a freshman and doing so well. He’s a role model for all of us.
“I’m a pacey winger who is very confident on the ball. I like to run at players and I’ll get hit and hit but I’ll keep coming back. I like to be expressive and I come alive in the box.”
Lewis also revealed that NYCFC were his favourite MLS side to watch in 2016 and he tuned in to more of their games than any other club.
He added: “NYCFC were the team I watched most last year – I really like the style of football. They play possession soccer, pressing and attack teams. Patrick likes players to express themselves so it’s going to be fun.
“I can’t wait to come to New York and pull on the jersey – I can’t wait for NYCFC to become one of the best teams in MLS.”
