It's been two weeks plus since the Boys in Blue last played a competitive match as a unit - but much valuable experience has been gained over the past days in preparation for the stretch run. World Cup berths were won by our Ticos, senior goals met in the case of Yangel Herrera, and youthful energy on full display in the form of Jack Harrison's Young Lions debut and James Sands (ongoing) U17 World Cup run in India.
Perhaps of most importance - a clean bill of health! Keep an eye out for the upcoming injury report - but no additional injuries were picked up on international duty so the squad should be fully loaded heading into New England and beyond...
Squad Goals
Much has been made of NYCFC's recent slowdown in terms of goals scored per game. It's been 8 games on the trot with one goal or less scored by the Boys in Blue, and while Vieira has emphasized the need to be more ruthless in front of goal, the team continues to control games and create chances. The last time the team put 2 up on the board? Aug 20. in a 2-1 win over New England at Yankee Stadium. Here's hoping NYCFC's attack sees red in the form of the Revolution on Sunday.
Getting Defensive
On the other side of the coin though - NYCFC has stepped up significantly down the stretch in terms of stoutness in defense. In that same stretch of 8 games - NYC has kept opponents to 1 or fewer goals as well. This organization and strength has been seen throughout the season but will become even more important as playoffs featuring potential knockout matches and two leg aggregate series approach.
Never Nothing to Play For
Despite New England being on the outside looking in with regards to MLS Cup Playoffs 2017 - Patrick Vieira has instilled a respect for opponents at all times in his squad - and the entire team knows Sunday will be a difficult game with the Revs wanting to treat their fans to a tasty display on the last home match day of the season.
Plus, everyone knows that with the rich sporting history between New England-based and New York teams, the Revolution would love nothing more than to play spoiler to NYCFC's search for the second seed.
