Match Recap

New York City FC were aiming for three consecutive wins as they traveled to face CF Montréal at Exploria Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Head Coach Ronny Deila named a back-three formation for the game, and introduced Luis Barraza for his first start in MLS with Sean Johnson on international duty.

Elsewhere, Malte Amundsen, Sebastien Ibeagha replaced Gudi Thórarinsson and James Sands in the starting XI, with the latter also away away at Gold Cup.

The game started quickly, and the hosts thought they were ahead after just 46 seconds when a long ball put Romell Quioto in behind.

He finished well but was denied the opening goal of the night by an offside flag. In response, NYCFC produced a good chance of their own in the 5th minute after forcing a turnover deep in the Montreal half.

Maxi Moralez collected the ball on the right-hand side of the penalty area and clipped the ball toward Keaton Parks.

He then produced a nice chest pass into the path of Ismael Tajouri-Shradi, but the forward failed to get any power behind his effort.

Both sides were keen to play through the lines with short passing, and it made for an engaging tactical battle.

That also presented an opportunity to capitalize on mistakes in possession, and a poor pass out the back from Montréal landed at the feet of Parks in the 25th minute.

Unfortunately his through ball to Moralez was just overhit and stopped the Argentine from notching his first goal of the season.

NYCFC would not be denied for much longer, however, thanks to a fine passing move involving five different players.

Started by Anton Tinnerholm, his pass to Nicolás Acevedo allowed the Uruguayan to find Moralez, who in turn flicked it into the path of Tajouri-Shradi.

He smartly dribbled to the byline and pulled it back for Parks to run onto and score – his second goal in as many games.

Montreal were keen to try and get Quioto in behind with his pace, and it was via that route they earned a penalty kick in the 39th minute.

The forward beat Ibeagha in a foot-race and then squared it back to Đorđe Mihailović. The midfielder attempted to fire off a shot, but caught the leg of Ibeagha instead.

Mason Toye stepped up to take the kick and sent Barraza the wrong way to level before the interval.

The second period struggled to establish a rhythm early on as both sides tried to dominate the ball.

NYCFC collected their first booking of the game when Moralez caught Mihailović in the middle of the field.

When the ball did settle Taty Castellanos fired off a ferocious shot from outside the penalty box in the 64thminute that Montréal’s goalkeeper could not contain.

Ronny Deila turned to his bench in the 72nd minute and withdrew Ibeagha in place of Thiago Andrade.

A minute later the hosts took the lead when a ball in behind from Mihailović found Quioto.

The Honduran then rounded Barraza in goal and tapped it home despite a last-ditch attempt on the line from Maxime Chanot.

Deila again turned to his bench with a bold triple substitution in the 81st minute. Tajouri-Shradi, Parks, and Amundsen departed the field in place of Jesús Medina, Talles Magno, and Thórarinsson.

It produced almost instant results when a cross from Thórarinsson found the head of Castellanos, but he could not keep his header down.

The Boys in Blue thought they had a late shout for a penalty when a Castellanos header landed in the path of Thiago. The Brazilian was clearly upended, but upon review, Castellanos was found to be marginally offside on the inital play.

Ultimately Quioto’s goal proved decisive and saw NYCFC suffer a disappointing 2-1 defeat on the road against CF Montréal.
