Recap
NYCFC headed to Canada to take on Toronto FC at BMO Field for the 12th time in the club’s history.
The last time the two teams met was in Toronto in August of 2018, when NYCFC came away with a 3-2 win thanks to a pair of goals from Ismael Tajouri-Shradi. Tajouri-Shradi coming off an ankle injury found himself in Dome Torrent’s starting lineup, along with Jesus Medina and Ben Sweat in the matchup against the Reds.
Toronto FC also had a few changes in their starting lineup as Jozy Altidore made his first start for the team after an injury stint, as well as the team's newly signed designated player Alejandro Pozuelo.
The team’s front line was threatening NYCFC’s box early on in the game resulting in a clutch save by Sean Johnson in the 7’ minute, then near goal by Marco Delgado in the 9’ minute but Justin Morrow was caught offside and the goal was overturned by VAR.
NYCFC was putting pressure on the Toronto FC defense as Anton Tinnerholm tore through their defensive line and took a shot on goal which was slightly to the left and just barely missed the back of the net.
The Reds didn’t take long to respond as Nick DeLeon found the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed called offside again, only this time there was no need for VAR.
The intensity building and the teams trading opportunities to score the opening goal, Alex Ring went close but Alex Bono got there just in time to block the ball.
After a series of near misses, Altidore struck first, scoring first goal of the night for Toronto FC taking the lead 1-0 in the 30’ minute.
Coming out in the second half, the Boys in Blue showed improvement in their efforts to score and almost had the chance as Alexandru Mitriță almost made it two goals in two games in Toronto, only this time Bono was there.
Toronto FC struck again, on a penalty kick taken by their new DP, Pozuelo beating Johnson to the back of the net in the 58’ and then again in the 78’ minute.
Unfortunately it didn’t stop there as the Reds scored another goal before the final whistle. The Boys in Blue settled for a tough 4-0 loss.
The team returns home to square off against yet another Canadian team as they welcome Montreal Impact to the Bronx on April 6.
