David was crowned MLS MVP on Tuesday morning at an event in Manhattan.
Here’s the full transcript of his acceptance speech…
Today is one of the biggest days of my career. Two years and a half ago when I decided to come here some people thought maybe I had come here to find a home and retire. I tried every day to show to the people with my body that I come here to be strong and competitive - to show that I want to grow my career and to follow through, to make history.
This trophy it means a lot to me because for this trophy, the community of players chose me, the coaches and the journalists choose me.
It’s a symbol for me on why I came here. I want to say thank you to a lot of people – first of all, I want to thank MLS and to the City Football Group for giving me the opportunity, to let me live this amazing dream.
Of course everyone working at NYCFC for helping me every day – my teammates, the people in the locker room – everyone who helps us every day. To Patrick, to all the coaching staff, to Jon Patricof and all of the people who work at the Manhattan office and at Purchase – this trophy is for you.
For all of the fans to give me the support, the love the passion for soccer. A special mention to the NYCFC fans for helping the club to grow every day. I want to say thank you to my friends, to my partner, to my family, to Victor and his wife Monica.
Thank you so much because two and a half years ago they made a great decision to come here with me to help me live this amazing dream.
To finish, the people who make my life. My wife Patricia, my son Luca and my daughters Zaida and Olaya – thank you for giving me everything I need in my life – I love you so much.
This is one of the most important days for me. I promise everyone that after January I will fight again for this trophy next year. Thank you.
