David Villa is the consummate Captain and that is proven at every training session and on game days.
It shows itself also after a loss. Yes, the forward scored twice, but Villa’s focus was squarely on the team and the disappointment of a 3-2 defeat to the Columbus Crew SC Saturday night
It was Villa’s second brace of the season (he also scored twice against Toronto FC in a 2-2 draw on March 13) and sixth of his NYCFC career.
“We are frustrated for the result,” Villa said. “We tried to play very good, but I think this is the best team we played in our conference. Columbus is a very good team.”
In his second season in Major League Soccer, Villa continues to be one of the league’s top scorers. After scoring 18 goals in 30 appearances a year ago, Villa has gotten off to a hot start this season with four goals in six starts and leads the league with 14 of his 30 shots on frame.
Villa is also scoring in different ways. On Saturday night, he pulled NYCFC level with his head, putting it in from eight yards out 15 minutes in. Here is the goal animation:
Villa then gave his team a lifeline from the penalty spot three minutes from full time, calmly putting his attempt past Columbus goalkeeper Steve Clark, who wrongly dived to his right.
Villa is now 2-for-2 on penalty attempts this season and 9-for-10 in two years with NYCFC.
