New York City FC Names Alex Ring Captain

New York City FC is happy to announce that midfielder Alex Ring has been named Captain of the First Team. The Finnish midfielder has worn the armband on various occasions over the past two seasons and will take the captaincy on a permanent basis moving forward for NYCFC.

“I’m immensely proud to be the Captain of this team and of this Club, it’s an honor.” Ring said. “You have a certain responsibility for the team. It’s your job to rally up the troops and get them ready for the games.”

Ring quickly established himself as one of the league’s best midfielders after joining the Club from 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 2017. He has played 59 regular season matches in his two seasons with the Club, starting 58 of those, and has scored twice and contributed four assists.

In 2018, Ring was selected for the MLS All-Star game and started for the MLS League side against Italian champions Juventus.

Ring becomes the second player in NYCFC’s history to be named Captain following in the footsteps of David Villa who captained the team throughout the Club’s first four seasons.

Head coach Domènec Torrent said:

“Alex is an incredible leader for our team both on the pitch and in the locker room. He’s the perfect professional and has earned the trust of his teammates since day one at the Club. It’s a big moment for him and one he deserves.”

Everyone at the Club would like to congratulate Alex on this honor.
