The support for New York City FC hasn’t wavered during their inaugural season in Major League Soccer.
A whopping 43,507 fans packed Yankee Stadium for the Historic Home Opener against New England on March 15. The average attendance for the seven home matches following that memorable 2-0 victory over the reigning Eastern Conference champions is 24,121.
Not surprisingly, a large crowd is expected for Sunday’s 5 p.m. EDT match against the Red Bulls (ESPN, 970 AM, WQBU). The Clubannounced 40,000 tickets sold on Wednesday.

New York City FC players are certainly looking forward to the atmosphere.
“Even though we started off struggling a bit, the fans were coming out in big numbers and supporting us and that hasn’t wavered,” defender Chris Wingert said. “It’s really special for us to see and it sounds like the support isn’t going to change. We’re looking forward to Sunday. We know they’re going to be loud and be behind us and hopefully we can reward them for their presence and effort with a good performance on the field.”
“It’s crazy to think we could possibly get more fans than we had for the home opener against New England,” goalie Ryan Meara said. “That would be huge for us. I know that day against New England it gave us a boost having the crowd behind us and being as passionate as they were. Hopefully we get the same, if not more, on Sunday and they can help us get the win.”
“As we saw with our match against New England, when we pack the house like that it creates a really dynamic atmosphere,” defender Jason Hernandez said. “I think our fans have done an amazing job showing up week in and week out and we hope they continue that trend Sunday and show support and drive us on again this weekend.”
