New York City FC hopes to add on to a franchise-best four-match winning streak when it heads to Children’s Mercy Park to take on Sporting Kansas City Sunday at 8 p.m.
Sitting atop the Eastern Conference four points clear of the Philadelphia Union, no team in Major League Soccer is hotter than NYCFC right now, which has a league-best four-match winning streak after defeating the New England Revolution, 1-0, Wednesday night at Gillette Stadium.
Frank Lampard scored the game’s lone goal, knocking a Tommy McNamara cross in with his knee just before the hour mark. It was Lampard’s third goal of the season.
NYCFC (8-5-6) has also registered three consecutive clean sheets and hasn’t conceded a goal in 272 minutes.
“I think we can always improve and having four wins, on the road, that gives us confidence and a happy camp to keep working and keep doing what we believe,” NYCFC coach Patrick Vieira said after the win against the Revolution. “I think coming here wasn’t an easy place to take the three points...I think we showed a lot of personality. We stick to our principles. We managed to play from the back. We create so many chances, we create so many situations, we really had control of the game.”
NYCFC also has the best road form in the league with a 5-1-2 mark away from Yankee Stadium. Meanwhile, five of Sporting Kansas City’s seven wins this year have come in the friendly confines of Children’s Mercy Park.
Sporting Kansas City (7-8-4) is currently fifth in the Western Conference, nine points off the pace set by FC Dallas. They are coming off a thrilling 3-2 win over the Columbus Crew with Matt Besler’s first goal since 2011, a header deep into second-half stoppage time, the difference.
Benny Feilhaber scored from the spot and Graham Zusi added a goal for Sporting Kansas City, which are now unbeaten in four straight games.
NYCFC has met Sporting Kansas City just once last year, losing 1-0 at Yankee Stadium on March 28, 2015.
