NYCFC is coming off a tough 2-0 loss to the Philadelphia Union Saturday at Talen Energy Stadium, a result that head coach Patrick Vieira said did not give a true indication of the better team.
“We deserved to take something back,” Vieira said after the match. “We made some mistakes that we shouldn't make at this level. But, on the other side, because we create more than we concede – much, much more – I feel that we deserve to take something back. When you analyze the game you can see that we controlled the game and I think we were by far the better team today. I believe that we dominated the game and created enough chances to score the goals.”
In a logjam of the Eastern Conference, NYCFC has six points from seven matches and is tied with the New York Red Bulls and Chicago Fire. Montreal, which is tied atop the east with 12 points, is coming off a 2-0 loss to Toronto FC Saturday in a game that featured the return of Didier Drogba to their lineup.
NYCFC won two of three matchups with Montreal a year ago and David Villa was a major player in each match. Villa, Mix Diskerud and Kwadwo Poku each scored in a 3-1 win at Yankee Stadium June 13. On July 4 at Saputo Stadium, Villa registered a brace and Josh Saunders made eight saves in a 2-1 win.
