New York City FC vs. Red Bulls: Spotlight on Tommy McNamara

Tommy McNamara celebrates his goal vs. Red Bulls

Tommy McNamara continued showing New York City FC head coach Jason Kreis he deserves a spot in the Starting XI week in and week out with yet another strong performance.

The 24-year-old midfielder scored his second goal of the season in the sixth minute of the Club's 3-1 loss to the Red Bulls in front of 48,047 on Sunday at Yankee Stadium.

David Villa played a short corner to Mehdi Ballouchy, who teed the ball back up for the captain. Villa's cross was cleared out of the box by the Red Bulls, but ran onto by Mix Diskerud. The midfielder chipped it back into the danger area toward Andrew Jacobson, whose header flicked the ball to McNamara. The former Chivas USA player showed deft control, trapping the ball with his chest and firing off a snap-shot to the far corner for a 1-0 lead.

It was the fastest goal in New York City FC history.

McNamara has two goals and one assist in the last four matches (all starts).

Here is his day in video, statistics, quotes and more.

McNamara said:

"We came out well. That’s how you want to start games. And it was the best-case scenario. You want to score in the first 5-10 minutes. After that, we had a few moments in the first half where we had really good looks on goal. It was a good way to start the match, but could have been a better ending.”
