New York City Football Club (NYCFC) can today announce that it has claimed forward Gabriel Segal off waivers.

The Bethesda, Maryland native arrives in New York from FC Köln in Germany after joining from Stanford University. Due to the fact that Segal played at the collegiate level in the U.S., the forward had to be acquired off waivers in order to play for a Major League Soccer (MLS) club.

Sporting Director David Lee said: “We would like to welcome Gabe to New York City Football Club. He is a young, talented, domestic attacker who had an excellent collegiate career at Stanford alongside playing for the United States Youth National Team. We are excited to have the opportunity to continue his development.

“The addition of NYCFC II to our player development pathway allows us to take advantage of these opportunities with the ability to play regular minutes in MLS NEXT Pro competition.”

While in Germany, Segal appeared in 12 matches and provided an assist for FC Köln II. During Segal’s collegiate career with the Cardinals, the forward played in 54 games, scoring 14 goals and five assists, winning a Pac-12 Championship and earning an All-Pac-12 selection during the 20/21 season.

On the international level, Segal has represented the U.S. across the U-18, U-17, U-16, and U-14 levels since January 2015.
