Maxime Oscars

The 89th Academy Awards take place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 26.

To celebrate, we’ve asked a number of NYCFC stars for their favorite movies of all-time.

So far we’ve learned of Andrea Pirlo’s appreciation for The Hangover and Sean Johnson’s love of Denzel Washington and the movie, Man on Fire.

Next up, it’s NYCFC’s resident movie guru, Maxime Chanot…

Maxime said…

“I love Cinderella Man with Russell Crowe – it’s the story of a boxer who used to be on top but then goes down and then has to come back up. It’s a great story and I’ve watched it maybe 50 times.”

“When the country was on its knees, he brought America to its feet…”

Cinderella Man tells the true life story of James J. Braddock, the former Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World.

Starring Russell Crowe, Rene Zellweger and Paul Giamatti, this Ron Howard directed epic was released in 2005 and received three nominations for Academy Awards.

Giamatti was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and the film also competed in the Best Film Editing and Best Makeup categories.

Irish-American boxer Braddock hailed from New Jersey and was forced to give up the sport after breaking his hand in the ring, forcing him to turn to manual labor against the backdrop of the Great Depression.

Due to a cancellation, Braddock returns to the ring after the no.2 contender in the world Corn Griffin and he shocks the world with his third round knockout.

That lays the foundations for a shot at boxing’s greatest prize but does he pull it off? Well, you’ll have to watch and find out!

Tomorrow, we find out which movie Andre Rawls selects as his favorite of all-time
