New York City FC is delighted to announce the acquisition of Kwame Watson-Siriboe from Real Salt Lake in exchange for NYCFC’s natural pick in the fourth round of the 2016 MLS SuperDraft.
A strong and powerful 6’3” central defender, Watson-Siriboe becomes the sixth player to sign for NYCFC.
“I am really happy to be able to continue my work with Kwame from my time at Real Salt Lake” said New York City FC Head Coach, Jason Kreis who managed Kwame for two seasons between 2012 and 2013.
“He is a player that was great to coach and I’m confident he will be able to contribute to the strength and shape of our back line as we continue to build towards our first game in March 2015.
“Kwame is the type of imposing central defender that is difficult to play against, adding him to the squad at this early point in our roster building process is fantastic.”
Watson-Siriboe becomes the second defender to join the Club after Jeb Brovsky was acquired from the Montreal Impact in June. Striker David Villa, goalkeeper Josh Saunders and central midfielders Frank Lampard and Andrew Jacobson complete NYCFC’s current roster.
The 27-year old Californian native and a product of UCONN arrives in New York City after stints with the Chicago Fire and Real Salt Lake, making 19 MLS appearances for Real Salt Lake after an injury impacted his second season with the club.
“I’m delighted to be reuniting with Jason Kreis and Miles Joseph” said Watson-Siriboe. “I had a great working relationship with Coach Kreis, I’m looking forward to continuing this under his leadership.
“I already know what he expects from his defenders and I am confident that I will be able to contribute effectively from the moment I begin training in January. I feel strong, fit and am excited to start working hard for my new club and for the NYCFC supporters.”
Watson-Siriboe also acknowledged the unique set-up of the new club:
“The management and Head Coach are building an exciting squad here. It’s a great challenge and opportunity for me to be part of something very special happening at New York City FC.”
