The 2018 Nexen Manchester City Cup returns this Memorial Day Weekend, and NYCFC’s Academy is looking forward to testing their soccer in the San Diego sunshine.
The Young Boys in Blue will face a fantastic test, going up against the likes of international powers Girona FC, Chivas de Guadalajara, Club America, domestic foes Real Salt Lake, Seattle Sounders, San Jose Earthquakes, LAFC, LA Galaxy, and local youth clubs San Diego Surf, Strikers FC, Arsenal FC, Real So Cal and Crossfire Premier.
The games will be held at both SoCal Sports Complex in Oceanside.
NYCFC Sporting Director Claudio Reyna said, “The Nexen Man City Cup is a great tournament to test our players, and our teams against the best youth Academy’s around the world. It’s an incredible experience to travel as a group and play in a beautiful area of the country.”
It’s not just the sun and surf that make the cup though, Reyna said:
“It’s good for our players to really face international competition, where the players are different than what they see here in the U.S. And we’re delighted that in New York, now with our Academy growing, we’re able to bring top talent to our club and then be able to provide them an experience like this, at the Nexen Manchester City Cup.”
While the competition will no doubt be fierce, development and enjoyment will be paramount on the weekend.
Reyna said: “We want them to enjoy themselves. There’s no pressure at these ages – they need to have a really good experience, and test themselves, and really enter the tournament, free to express themselves and be confident against these teams.”
That’s the “City Way”.
