New York City Football Club’s Concacaf Champions League tie against Comunicaciones will be a ‘great experience’ according to Head Coach Ronny Deila.
The Boys in Blue will participate in the first leg of their Champions League tie on Tuesday after overcoming Santos de Guápiles in the previous round. Speaking ahead of the game, Deila revealed he is keen to sample the new test that Comunicaciones will provide his players.
“We're very happy that we aren’t going to Colorado and instead are going to Guatemala,” he explained. “It’s Champions League and you don't want to play teams that are in your own league. It is better to play in other countries and that's why you play internationally. It’s going to be a great experience and two tough games with hopefully a good atmosphere and something to remember.”
The first leg comes after a busy seven weeks for NYCFC spent on the road. Reflecting on that hectic start to the campaign, Deila revealed he was pleased with how his team have adapted to those early demands as they remain focused on enjoying the moment.
“I think we are in a very good place,” he said. “It’s impossible to say that you don’t have challenges with traveling. There's no other country in the world that has this kind of traveling. I think we adapted very well to it. We have a really good time together all the time. I think we’ve had good performances all the time so we have good confidence in the team – the belief, the spirit, you see they fight every game.
“Tomorrow is a huge game again. I think we just love the moment right now. It's like you go from game to game and every game is important. To be in that position is because we did something great last year and we really, really enjoy it.”
