New York City Football Club Head Coach Ronny Deila has stressed that the job is only ‘half done’ following his team’s 3-1 win against Comunicaciones on Tuesday night.
The Boys in Blue hosted the side from Guatemala in the first leg of their Concacaf Champions League tie with a place in the semifinals at stake. Goals from Taty Castellanos, Maxi Moralez, and, Santiago Rodríguez handed the hosts a 3-1 victory on the night, but Deila was keen to stress that does not secure them a place in the next round.
“It was even in the start of the game and then I think we had better control,” Deila said. “We created a lot of chances and scored three goals. We got a good result to take with us to Guatemala, but it's only halftime, there’s still a lot of work to do to get through to this semifinal.”
A physical encounter between two determined teams, Deila also took time out to praise both sets of supporters for playing their part in creating a memorable atmosphere on Tuesday night.
“It was actually great to have a good atmosphere in the stadium,” he said. “We had our supporters there and we are very grateful that they are coming. We know how hard it is to come so late in the in the night – driving two hours from from New York. At the same time, we chose a spot that meant we get a lot of Guatemalan fans. They created a very good atmosphere for the game. So the result also ended good and we were happy with the night.”
