New York City Football Club Head Coach Ronny Deila has praised the culture within the Club following his team’s 6-0 victory against Real Salt Lake.
The Boys in Blue found themselves 3-0 up at halftime in what is the first of five consecutive home games in Major League Soccer. Carrying that energy through until the final whistle, they added another three goals to make it 6-0 and equal the biggest ever win in Club history. Speaking afterward, Deila commended his players for bouncing back from their midweek exit in the Concacaf Champions League, adding that it spoke to the culture at the Club.
“It was a great performance,” he said. “It wasn’t our best performance, I think that was on Wednesday but we didn’t score our goals, we did tonight. I’m very impressed by the guys. It was a big dream for everyone to win the Champions League. To get going again and show that kind of commitment and desire to win, it's great to see. It says something about the culture in the group. We played well from the first minute until the last minute. It’s great to give something back to our supporters that have been there all the time.”
On a day when NYCFC’s attacking output defined the contest, Deila also took time to appreciate the strength and depth available to him in midfield and attack and the tactical versatility that has afforded him as coach.
“I think our wingers have been wider the last two games,” he said. “I think before we didn’t have real wingers, before Talles Magno and Thiago Andrade, and now we have Gabriel Pereira. I think we also have clear number eights in the team too. It’s a little bit about what kind of personnel we use, and what kind of players we use and how we try to put it together as best as possible. We can see also in the game against Seattle that we can change to be more and more offensive during games. We can change formations we can really go hard if we want to, but we have to find the right way to go into every game and find balance. I think we're more hard to read now.”
