Sierra Floricic wasn’t afraid to channel the New York spirit of hard work and hustle to get what you want.

The talented teenager shone with New York City FC Girls in 2023, and she was eager to take those talents onto the international stage by representing Croatia – the birthplace of her parents.

The Queens native was part of two u17 national camps – one in the summer and one this past winter - and she is already seeing the benefits of the experience.

“The best experience I have had with the national team is being able to meet and play with girls from other countries,” she said. “I got to experience different styles and levels of play. The level of competition in Croatia is very high. Their style of play is very fast and physical, and they move the ball from side to side very quickly.

“Being a part of these camps has shown me the importance of hard work and dedication. It is important to always keep working if you want to accomplish your goals.”

A proud moment for Floricic’s family, it is undeniably the direct consequence of her hard work with New York City FC. The 17-year-old joined the Girls program last year and her dedication to the game has made a strong early impression.

"From the first day we saw Sierra at training, her work ethic and determination to be a competitor has always shown through, this didn't come as a surprise as we were very familiar with Sierra prior to her joining us. She was a standout player throughout her youth soccer career and played on local teams Auburndale, Manhattan SC, Met Oval” Raul Santos Manager, Competition & Development.

“She has always been a player who is extremely coachable and receptive to coach feedback. This in our eyes is one of her most standout features as a player, and how she uses that to improve herself on a day-to-day basis combined her work ethic has helped her develop into the player we know today."

Sierra is also quick to acknowledge the role that New York City FC has played, not only in her continued development, but also in preparation for camps with Croatia.

“New York City FC has helped me prepare for these camps with Croatia,” she explained. “My coaches have helped me prepare both mentally and physically. They have shown massive support and encouragement. My teammates show me so much support and always push me to be the best I can.

“The coaching has helped me get better in areas I was struggling with. My coaches have helped me increase my confidence and taught me new approaches and skills.

“The best thing about being on the New York City FC Girls team is being able to create a lasting bond with both the girls and coaches, on and off the field.”

With 2023 ending on such a high, the talented teen is ready to make further gains this year. As well as succeeding at club level, Sierra is eager for more international recognition and more players like her to join the program.

“In 2024 I hope, for my team, that we do well in California at the USYS National League P.R.O. tournament and strengthen our chemistry,” she said. “For the girls’ program, I hope that it continues to grow so that more girls are able to have the opportunity to enjoy soccer.”
