Anton Tinnerholm continues to impress as the form he demonstrated to win June Etihad Player of the Month has spilled over into this month.
The Swedish defender came up huge in the 66th minute with a brave block on Columbus’ Pedro Santos that surely saw the wind taken from the Crew’s sails.
Tinnerholm then provided the insuring second goal as the defender made a run that turned into a clinical finish. A streaking run followed by a cut back to place the ball at his left foot created space for Tinnerholm to slip the ball into the goal for this third of the year.
On his goal scoring opportunity: “No it wasn't [a volley], but Albert [Puig] told me I looked like Messi so I can take it.”
Tinnerholm played every minute of City’s grueling three match week. The defender had this to say about the team’s approach:
“We showed today [it’s not an issue] for us to play two games in three days. So now there’s a tough game on Saturday but today we showed character and we showed we were a better team than them and we’re not that team in the first half today.”
“We said at halftime we needed to have a better tempo, a higher tempo and make it more difficult for them and I think we showed it in the second half in how we scored the first goal.”
“Today was a normal gameplan - we want to dominate at home and play off all the chances. I think we dominated, I think we played good with the game today.”
