Spotlight on Villa vs Columbus

“No doubt about it, I would vote for David for the MVP this year. He's been fantastic for the team, for the league, and I think he deserves that award."

Those were Patrick Vieira’s words after watching his leading man net two more goals, taking him to 22 for the Regular Season and earning a spot in the MLS Team of the Week.

It wasn’t quite enough to oust Nemanja Nikolic as the top-scorer in the league but, considering David Villa missed games following the September international break, to go so close was truly impressive.

Of course, David had already become the first player to score 20 goals in back-to-back MLS Regular Seasons with his goal in Chicago but he wasn’t finished there, as Columbus Crew SC found out to their cost in the 2-2 tie.

Villa looked razor sharp at Citi Field and was actually unfortunate to only end the afternoon with two goals – outside of his penalty which was well-saved by Zack Steffen, the 35-year old almost scored a Goal of the Season contender with a brilliant acrobatic effort in the second half.

On yesterday’s evidence, it’s fair to say that captain is ready for his second crack at the MLS Playoffs as NYCFC await their opponents out of the Knockout Round…

Key Moment…

NYCFC were excellent on Sunday, especially in the first half, where they didn’t allow Ola Kamara’s opening goal on 11’ to knock them out of their stride.

The equalizer came just seven minutes later when Villa stole away to the near post and thumped a header which looked in even before Steffen could dive.

In Patrick’s Words…

“When you decide who's going to be the MVP for the year, I think you need to look at the consistency of the players, the games that they played and how important they were for their team.
