Staff Picks: Goal of the Season (So Far)

David Villa In Front of Fans vs Atlanta 1

It’s the international break and so we thought it was the perfect time to take a pause and a look back at the first 15 games of the MLS Season.

Over the next few days we’ll be asking members of NYCFC’s Digital Team for their picks for Player, Match, Goal and Moment of 2017 (so far).

We kick off today with our staff nominations for Goal of the Season (or Goal of the First 15 Games, if you prefer)…

Mark Booth: Managing Editor
Goal: David Villa vs. Atlanta United

Fresh off the announcement of David Villa’s contract extension, El Guaje marked the occasion in typically brilliant style, scoring a goal which was spookily reminiscent of his first-ever for NYCFC.

Exchanging passes with Rodney Wallace, Villa opened up his body, curling the ball around the Atlanta goalkeeper and into the top corner via the inside of the post.

Laying the foundations for an emphatic win over the in-form Expansion Team, it was an important one which cemented NYCFC’s position towards the summit of the Eastern Conference.

Carter Daly: Social Media Manager
Goal: Jack Harrison Away vs. Columbus

One of great substance and a different kind of style that has been important to New York City FC’s success so far this season.

In a game where the captain was sidelined, the opponent was one of the strongest in the conference, and the score was the wrong way around – the triumvirate of Rodney Wallace, Yangel Herrera, and Jack Harrison combined to create pressure and calm in equal measure taking the lead for good and bringing three points back to New York.

Daniel Khudyak: Coordinator, Video
Goal: Tommy McNamara vs. San Jose

Tommy McNamara’s game-winning goal versus San Jose. Signature behind the back pass from Villa, followed by a selfless cut-back pass from Mata, and finessed by McNamara. Textbook teamwork that involved a player from each third of the field.

Milo Kowalski: Graphic Designer
Goal: Tommy McNamara vs. FC Dallas

Perhaps not top of mind for most, but Tommy’s goal on the road in Dallas was not only important in that it helped draw the Club level in the match for a hard-earned road point, but it also showed the grit and determination that’s made him such a fan favorite.

And you know he’s laying it all on the line if he loses his headband in the process...

(Can't help but feel that there's a huge 50-yard Philadelphian elephant in the room here...)

Anyway, join us tomorrow when we compile our staff picks for favorite match… in the meantime, let us know your goal of the season so far on Twitter @NYCFC.
