The Away End | CF Montréal with Tony Marinaro

_1920x1080

New York City Football Club host CF Montréal tonight at Yankee Stadium.

For this edition of 'The Away End' presented by Berkeley College & Rennert International, we spoke to Tony Marinaro, host of the Sick Podcast, which covers CF Montréal.

Hi Tony, thanks for speaking with us. How long have you been covering CF Montréal?

I've been watching them since 1993. I've been covering them since 2002.

What has been your highlight in that time?

I'd have to say Cameron Porter's last second goal vs Pachuca in the Concacaf champions league semi final in March 2015. Another was, Didier Drogba scoring 3 goals vs. the Chicago Fire in his first Montreal impact start.

How would you evaluate their 2023 season so far?

I would say they're team that is a tough one to beat at home. They pride themselves on clean sheets at home.

What are your hopes for the team for the rest of the season?

Montréal operate with the lowest salary in the entire MLS. It would be a big accomplishment for Hernan Losada if the team could make the playoffs.

What do you think will be the deciding factor in the game on Wednesday?

Both teams need points in this game, especially NYCFC who need all three points at home. For that reason, I think CF Montréal will probably play a low block and try to be very tight defensively. They will feel the longer the goes on without NYCFC leading the more they'll have to open up, which could allow CFMTL to fashion counter attacks. Having said that, NYCFC likes to press high and if get an early goal then CFMTL will have to change the way they play and will be out of their comfort zone.

For any fans that might be in Montréal for a game in the near future, are there any pregame spots you suggest they check out?

My personal favorite spots in Montréal in Little Italy or Old Montréal. There aren’t too many spots around the stadium that will provide a pregame atmosphere. Your best bet is to get to the stadium early and tailgate with the Montréal fans who are friendly and accommodating.
