New York City Football Club host Charlotte FC on Wednesday night.
For this edition of 'The Away End' presented by Berkeley College & Rennert International, we spoke to Charlotte FC lead commentator Eric Krakauer.
Hi Eric, how long have you been working for Charlotte FC?
Less than a year. I joined Charlotte FC in December of 2021, ahead of the club's 2022 Expansion Season. I moved on the day of the jersey release party. I literally drove from Miami that day, with my fiance, my 2-year-old daughter, 3-month-old son, and cat, and arrived a couple of hours before the event kicked off - which I was hosting
What has been your highlight during that time?
This is a difficult question to answer. So I'll cheat and pick three. The first is calling the club's inaugural game against DC United. I'd be lying if said I didn't feel the weight of the occasion. I was dreading making a mistake that would live in infamy. Fortunately, that didn't happen, as Lloyd Sam and I called a good game despite the disappointing loss. The second is calling Charlotte FC's first-ever win against New England. After three straight losses, supporters were expecting a good performance. The Crown delivered and fortunately for me, I got to call three historic goals. Finally, the third is attending the inaugural home game with my fiance, kids, and my mother (who flew from Portugal). I got quite emotional when they all got to see my face plastered on the jumbotron. After all, I'm not that far removed from being an NYC public school teacher who had a soccer podcast. How would you evaluate the team's season so far?
An emotional rollercoaster ride? Definitely a Jekyll and Hyde campaign - excuse the cliche. Home form has been terrific but road woes have pegged the team back in the playoff race.
Who would you predict as the team's dangerman heading into the game?
Probably Karol Swiderski. The Polish international is the club's first DP signing, the top scorer, and a complete forward.
This is the first meeting of the season for these two, what do you think will be the deciding factor in Wednesday's game?
Whether Charlotte can keep things tight at the back again. The team has been defensively sound for much of the season, but has been conceding a lot of goals in recent games; particularly, away from home.
And for any of our supporters that might be in Charlotte soon are there any spots you'd suggest they check out?
You're asking the wrong guy. With two young children, it's been difficult to explore Charlotte as much as I would like. However, I know enough to suggest South End for the nightlife. And maybe the French Quarter pubs (yes, we have one) before kick-off. I'd also encourage NYCFC supporters to tailgate with Charlotte FC supporters on McNinch Street. Charlotte's supporters groups are very welcoming and know how to have a good time.
