New York City Football Club are on the road this weekend as they face Inter Miami CF at DRV PNK Stadium.
For this edition of 'The Away End' presented by Berkeley College & Rennert International, we spoke to José Armando Rodríguez of Deporte Total USA.
Hi José, thanks for speaking with us. How long have you been covering Inter Miami CF?
I've been covering Inter Miami CF from day one. As a matter of fact, even before we actually had a name, colors and what we all know as Inter Miami. It has been a long run and that is why I cherish the good and the 'bad' that comes with having a professional soccer team in town.
What has been your highlight during that time?
It happened a few weeks ago in Open Cup when Inter Miami played against Miami FC. I believe that was the start of a great rivalry between two teams that I have covered from day one, the South Florida community came together and over 10.000 fans witnessed the first ever "Miami Clásico".
How would you evaluate Inter Miami’s season so far?
They are doing exactly as I thought they would. Because of the sanctions and the growing pains of a new franchise I never expected Inter Miami to be incredibly successful this season. They are putting pieces together that will be important in the near future. I can understand the frustration from the fan base when you're struggling to win games, good things will come with time on a more consistent basis.
Who would you predict as the team's dangerman heading into the game?
Gonzalo Higuaín. He's back and not only scoring goals but helping in the build up when is needed. He has developed in a short time a great connection with Alejandro Pozuelo, I guess talent and experience have something to do with that.
Last time the two teams met NYCFC emerged 2-0 winners, what do you think will be the deciding factor in the game this weekend?
I expect the game to be different from what happened last time. Inter Miami plays at a higher level at home. Plus, they need to win almost every single home game to keep up in the race for the playoffs so I would expect Phil Neville to be aggressive from the start. Inter Miami needs to dictate the tempo of the game and try to score early, that could be the deciding factor.
And for any of our supporters that might be in Miami soon are there any spots you'd suggest they check out?
You can't go wrong with Cuban food in Miami. And yes, I know the stadium is in Fort Lauderdale but it's worth the drive to visit two of my favorites: Versailles and La Carreta.
