New York City FC are on the road Sunday as they face New England Revolution.
For this edition of 'The Away End' presented by Berkeley College & Rennert International, we spoke to journalist Gustavo Lopes.
Hi Gustavo, thanks for speaking with us. How long have you been covering the New England Revolution?
I have been covering the New England Revolution professionally since 2021. Right now I am a reporter for Nossa Radio USA, a Brazilian radio station and also an official partner of the New England Revolution.
What would you describe as your highlight during that time?
I have a few moments that I'm very proud of during my career, but citing a recent moment, it was during the last day of the MLS transfer window where I ended up breaking some news and the feedback I got from the fans was something I was quite proud of.
How would you evaluate the Revs season so far?
I would describe it as disappointing and poorly planned. After a year as successful as last year, expectations were high and the team couldn't keep up. And it was poorly planned because Bruce, with the exception of Petrovic, couldn't get it right when it came to signing and replacing the players who left this year.
If you were to identify the Rev's dangerman who would that be?
The Revs have big names like Carles Gil and Gustavo Bou coming back from injury. However, one person who has not been valued enough in this team is veteran Emma Boateng. He's been a solid part of this team especially coming off the bench and is someone who really manages to change the game when he steps onto the field. In addition to the traditional pieces already mentioned, the opponent has to worry about Emma in the second half.
What do you think will be the decisive factor in Sunday's game?
The main factor of the game will be how the teams will act in the middle of the field. Recalling last year's playoff game, NYCFC managed to find a strategy to block Matt Polster's exit and not let the Revolution create chances. Both teams have great attackers and great goalkeepers, so I believe that the team that manages to find the best strategy to dominate the central circle will be the favorite to win the game.
And finally, for any of our fans that may be in Boston for a game in the near future, are there any spots you'd suggest they check out?
Of course Foxboro is a little far away from Boston but my suggestion would be the Village Bar in Everett. A classic sports bar that faces the Boston Casino, so it's two attractions in one.
