New York City FC travel to Subaru Park on Wednesday to face Philadelphia Union.
For this edition of ‘The Away End’ presented by Berkeley College & Rennert International, we spoke to Danny Higginbotham, former Premier League defender, and now color analyst for the Philadelphia Union.
Hi Danny, thanks so much for speaking with us. How long have you been covering the Philadelphia Union?
This is my first season covering the Union. We moved over to the United States last November. It's been absolutely brilliant and the club is great to be part of.
What’s been your favorite moment covering the team so far?
As in terms of performances I would have to say the recent 3-0 home win v Toronto. It was a real Union performance after a few frustrating games. Also watching the younger players progress and impress has been great to see.
The Union are right up there in the Eastern Conference this season. How would you evaluate their 2021 campaign so far?
I think it's been good in terms of the great run in Concacaf. I also think that may have affected some of the performances in the league but all in all it's turning out to be a good season with lots still to play for.
From a tactical standpoint, what strengths should Ronny Deila and his team be wary of heading into the game?
The Union are a collective more than individuality and that's something that's such a strong characteristic of the team. They are a very good counter-attacking team that has a system that suits the players.
If you were to identify the Union’s danger-man, who would that be?
Santos is a player that on his day is a match for any defender in the league whilst Gaz Dag has an eye for a pass and is getting stronger game by game. Also Elliott and Glesnes have one of the best center back partnerships in the league.
And finally, for any fans thinking of making the trip to Philly in the future, are there any particular attractions you’d suggest checking out?
Can't go wrong with a cheese steak and of course the Rocky steps!
