New York City FC are preparing for a game against Portland Timbers on Saturday in what is their first ever MLS Cup Final appearance.

For this edition of 'The Away End' presented by Berkeley College & Rennert International, we spoke to Portland’s official mascot, Timber Joey.

Hi Joey, thanks for speaking with us. How long have you been associated with the Timbers?

I’ve been a fan since moving to Portland in 2001 and I started my career with the team in 2008

What’s been your favorite moment since joining the team?

The best part is being able to use my platform to give back to our community. On normal years I often participate in upwards of 275 charity events.

The Timbers have enjoyed a strong season culminating in winning the Western Conference. How would you evaluate the season?

It’s been a steady powerful climb. Not just for the play on the field but also the fans who were away from our stadium for most of 2020. Everything has started coming together at the right time and I’m excited for MLS Cup!

If you were to identify Portland's dangerman, who would that be?

The great thing about this club is they work together. Tough to call one danger man :)

Portland games are well known for their impressive atmosphere - what makes it so special in your opinion?

The grass roots ability to create. There is no megaphone or pumped in sound at Providence Park. Just pure passion and fans that go the extra mile to create, learn, and produce the experience we enjoy.

And finally, for anyone that may be in the area for the game, are there any attractions you'd suggest they check out?

If there is time I’d suggest Multnomah Falls or the coast. If you’re staying closer to town then I’d suggest coming hungry. We have great food! Read a book at Powell’s. Hike in forest park. Check out the view from the Pittock Mansion.
