When Patrick Vieira spoke to members of the media in the press conference following tonight's result, it was with a smile on his face.
His NYCFC squad have locked up a second-placed finish in the Eastern Conference and a first-round playoff bye for the second year in a row, and even though they had to sweat it out as other results from around the league fell into place, Vieira feels good about where his side is at.
"We are really pleased because, I think, finishing second in the league this season is a really good achievement," said Vieira.
"It was a really good game of football. There was a lot of intensity, a lot of drama as well, and I think we all enjoyed the game, but of course I'm delighted and really pleased that we got that second spot."
On a beautiful night at Citi Field, there couldn't have been to celebrate Fan Appreciation Day than by giving the NYCFC faithful what they wanted. Vieira and his squad got the result, and the gaffer praised the supporters for showing up and doing what they do best.
"The crowd really turned up today," acknowledged Vieira. "Our fans make lots of noise, the support was fantastic."
Next, the focus turns toward the playoffs, and for the second year in a row, Vieira's NYCFC squad will have a few extra days to prepare for their quest for MLS Cup. Vieira knows that the expectations for his side are raised.
"We are an eleven now where there are a lot of expectations, so it is important for us to deliver," said Vieira.
"I think what will be most important for myself and the staff is to keep all the players concentrated, focused, and keep them under pressure.
"What is good now, is that we have all the players back now, and that is really good. Maxime Chanot trained with the rest of the team this morning. So having all the players back and working well, that's a massive help for our club."
David Villa is one of the players working exceptionally well at the moment, and even though his brace to cap off the regular season wasn't enough to earn him the MLS Golden Boot, Patrick Vieira still thinks his Captain is worthy of an MVP trophy for the second year in a row.
"Yeah, of course. When you decide who's going to be the MVP for the year, I think you need to look at the consistency of the players, the games that they played and how important they were for their team.
"No doubt about it, I would vote for David for the MVP this year," said Patrick. "He's been fantastic for the team, for the league, and I think he deserves that award."
