In the week that the Ballon d’Or award for the world’s best player was handed out, David Villa has delivered his verdict on the world’s best player.
Cristiano Ronaldo took home the 2016 prize after playing a vital role in Portugal’s Euro 2016 success but one man stands above all others, according to the MLS MVP.
Lionel Messi was David’s teammate for three glorious seasons at the Camp Nou and so El Guaje knows what he’s talking about when he remarks: “Messi, he's the best. The reason is simple. Because he is the best.”
David was speaking at a fan event in Korea where he’s promoting the latest branch of his DV7 Soccer Academies.
The 35-year old fielded supporters’ questions on a myriad of subjects, including the competitive nature of MLS and his prospects of a recall to the Spanish national team.
While Villa feels it’s difficult to see a situation where he will have the opportunity to extend his lead as Spain’s record goalscorer, he’s not given up completely just yet.
“I try my best to keep as fit as possible. I know I'm old now and cannot play as many games as before. I try to eat and recover well. Maybe my parents gave me good genes. I feel well, very well.
“It's nice to hear many fans ask me about national team. But I think it's difficult. Spain already has quality forwards. Although I have not given up all hopes yet.”
On his new academy venture, David explained the philosophy behind the foundation he’s president of, as well as his post-playing career plans.
“I have more passion in youth development,” he added. “I think it has so much possibility. I'm not thinking about becoming a coach or club staff right now.
“I want to create a program to raise good human beings, not only good football players as it is difficult for everyone to become a professional player.”
