For David Villa, New York City FC milestones are nothing new.
The Club’s first signing, first captain, first home goalscorer and first MLS MVP broke ground once again on Pride Day in the Bronx.
However, typical of the man, he relegated individual achievements beneath the success of the collective after he fired his team to a 2-1 win over Seattle Sounders with his 50th and 51st goals.
The 35-year old earned a standing ovation after netting both second half strikes which gave his side a second comeback victory in as many games at Yankee Stadium.
Villa reflected: “We’re happy, we did so well today to come back in the game in bad conditions against a great team.
“We gave power, we did it with confidence, we did well so we are very happy.”
A team player, the skipper knows that his goals are worth so much more on days like today, when they secure points.
Amid a deluge of rain which made the game difficult for a side which rely heavily on buildup and slick passing moves, Villa was proud of the performance and dedicated the three points to the fans.
“I’m happy to make history for our club,” Villa reflected, “Of course the goals are good for me but they’re good for the club.
“I think that a lot of these goals gave points to NYCFC and gave good memories and moments which is the most important thing – I’m working for the fans, for the club.”
Now, the boys in blue have a week to prepare for the first MLS derby of the campaign at Red Bull Arena and David is channeling all of his focus towards that.
He added: “We need to work well this week against Red Bulls – it will be difficult in their home but we try to win there too and we’re working from Tuesday for that. I hope we have a great week and we can take the three points.”
