Here are your nominees for the Etihad Player of the Month for August 2024.
Maxi Moralez
Maxi Moralez showed his class and quality throughout August.
The veteran playmaker controls the game like few players in MLS can. City’s success in Leagues Cup owed much to Moralez’s quality on the ball. An assist in the group stage against FC Cincinnati was the precursor to a vintage showing against Tigres.
Moralez scored City’s equalizer before creating Santiago Rodríguez’s game-winning goal. The 37-year-old ended the month with an assist for City’s opening goal against the Chicago Fire FC in MLS.
Santiago Rodríguez
Santiago Rodríguez continues to be a shining light in attack for City. The tricky Uruguayan has already claimed this award on four occasions this season, underpinning his importance to the team.
His skills and trickery on the ball make him a nightmare for defenders. Rodríguez scored in three consecutive games for City, including a memorable strike against Liga MX outfit Tigres during a 2-1 win.
That took Rodríguez to 11 goals in all competitions this season, a tally he will hope to add to in the remaining games.
Alonso Martínez
The Costa Rican striker has enjoyed a strong season with City, notching 11 goals in MLS.
August saw him break into double figures for the first time with City thanks to a brace against the Chicago Fire.
He finished the month with a goal against the Columbus Crew after just four minutes. A well-taken finish that saw Martínez spin and then calmly slot the ball into the corner, the strike highlighted his growing reputation as a dangerous finisher in MLS.
Adding to that with a goal in Leagues Cup, Martínez also celebrated a recall to the Costa Rican national team after a stellar August in front of goal.
