Here are your nominees for the Etihad Player of the Month for July 2024.
Matt Freese
Freese has been a difference maker for New York City FC in 2024.
The shot-stopper played five times for City in MLS in July and helped the Club collect points in all but one of their games. Starting the month with a clean sheet against CF Montréal, he picked up his fifth clean sheet of the season two games later against Chicago Fire.
An imposing figure that commands his penalty area, Freese’s willingness to put his body on the line, and serve as a calming presence is key for his teammates.
A string of brilliant saves helped City maintain their push toward the top of the Eastern Conference and in turn, earned Freese a nomination this month.
Thiago Martins
A defender, a captain, a leader, Thiago Martins is a leading voice on the pitch for New York City FC.
His speed across the pitch and composure on the ball make him one of the league’s most well-rounded defenders. A physically imposing defender, he rarely gives opponents time to settle on the ball.
A member of the 2024 MLS All-Star game, City’s captain missed just one game in July as he helped City five points from some tricky games – which has seen him deservedly nominated for this award.
James Sands
The guy from Rye offers steel and composure in the engine room.
Now 24, Sands has played well over 100 times for City, and that maturity shows in his play. A calming presence in midfield, Sands is not afraid of a strong tackle when the moment calls for it.
Missing just one game this past month, that consistent presence helped City establish consistency as they seek to pick up some valuable road points.
No doubt eager to carry that form into the rest of the season, Sands set a high standard of play in July, hence earning this nomination.
