The Weekend: Wrapping up Week 23

the weekend 23

Hello folks and welcome once again to Monday—a day we all know and love. It was another jam-packed weekend of MLS action and, as always, there were plenty of highlights, lowlights, and everything in between.

Of course, there were plenty of highlights from NYCFC's 2-0 victory over the LA Galaxy, all of which you can check out here. Spoiler alert: there are a couple of golazos in there.

Precipitation of the Week

Let's check in on RFK Stadium. Over to you, Brian!

Oh wow. But hey, it's just rain. It probably passed right through and the teams were back in the tunnel in no time.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhh.

If you gaze into the abyss, the abyss will gaze into you. It will do so with a face that resembles a watery Kyle Beckerman.

Anyway, they postponed that match.

Volley of the Week

About 24 hours later, RSL's Luis Silva did this.

That is one heck of a strike, but check out the quick reactions to set it up. Silva goes from cutting off a pass to scoring a goal in about 0.8 seconds. To hit that ball with zero hesitation from that angle is a bold move, but sometimes you just have to take a swing and see what happens. It might just pay off.

Forty Five of the Week

Toronto FC faced off against the Portland Timbers this weekend, and both teams did just about zilch in the first half. After the break, Toronto decided that they were going to start being extremely good at soccer, and ripped off four goals. We crunched the numbers, and that is a goal every eleven minutes and fifteen seconds. That's pretty good.

Doink of the Week

Columbus scored three goals this weekend, and their opener was by far the most accidental. Kekuta Manneh was gifted an excellent opportunity from close range in the 18th minute, and he put a smooth finish on an otherwise very goofy play.

That's... that's soccer, right there.

Consolation Prize of the Week

It didn't really matter at the end of the day, but Diego Valeri proved yet again that he only scores amazing goals. Here he is dancing through four Toronto defenders and finishing at the far post like it's nothing.
